But that's "usability" and "what works and what doesn't"
for *typesetters,* which is not necessarily the same as
for readers. Any typesetter will confirm that choosing
the single space definitely makes production easier when
converting a manuscript to offest type; whether it makes
a difference to the reader is another matter, and my
experience (whatever you want to classify it) is that
readers don't notice and couldn't care less.

FWIW, our style guide doesn't address the issue at all,
I have given my writers no guidance whatsoever on it, and
couldn't even tell you which format any given writer
prefers. For all I know, documents that have been worked
on by multiple writers may even have mixed spacing.
Anybody care to guess how many comments we've gotten on
it?
