No specific authorities come to mind -- just the reading I did about
typography in the graduate program at Northeastern. A quick Google
search, though, comes up with Ilene Strizver -- one page is at
http://www.itcfonts.com/ulc/article.asp?nCo=AFMT&sec=ulc&issue=28.2.1&art=lns2
and she is quoted elsewhere. I'm sure there are others. Oh, here's a
page that says it's presenting information from Tufte --

But perhaps we are talking about apples and oranges, or perhaps I just
was mistaken about the historical origin. Now, how does one explain
the serifs that appear in Medieval manuscripts made by pen and ink?
