It's free. I've had a MS Passport for a several years and nothing bad has
happened because of it.
It's a philosophical thing. Some of us don't think that any company should have that much potential power over customers - even if we have nothing to hide.
Sounds to me as though Microsoft is hoping to entice more users to Passport.
Not that it matters to me. I do my daily work in Linux, so my software is free anyway.
