I once had the opportunity to survey a large percentage of our users on this
particular topic -- what kind of binding they preferred for our (massive)
User's Guide. The results were 98% in favor of three-ring binders. While I
agree that it's ugly, it's very practical for them. They can add their own
notes and training materials, and they can break up the book for different
users. (Many clients have certain users that use only particular modules of
the software.) In addition, since we allow photocopying, they can produce
multiple copies on their own.
For what it's worth, though, we never try to update sections at a time. The
consensus of other Techwr-lers is correct. No one seems able or willing to
make that effort.
