Dan Goldstein replied:

It does exist: Microsoft Word X for Mac goes for $209.99 on Amazon. Word X
is fully compatible with Word for Windows 97, 2000, and XP (2002). Macworld
reviewed the program and spoke highly of it. Perhaps you can convince the
folks at Pulsar Technologies to buy it for you, if it's more efficient than
your current workaround.

Actually Microsoft Office 2004 was released last April, replacing Word/Office X, with some new features that aren't available yet on Windows, so the Mac's ahead here.

It runs faster and more smoothly than X did on my Mac, and has some nice new PowerPoint options -- especially good for streaming -- and good UI improvements across the board.

If you don't want to go that route, OpenOffice.org runs on Mac OS X just fine, inside an X11 window.

We have it installed in our computer lab here, and it works well. And it's free (though you could always donate, via http://www.openoffice.org/contributing.html).

Technical note: If you haven't installed OS X recently, you might also need to download and install Apple's free X11 implementation (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/download/)
