There's still time to submit a proposal for next year's annual conference; the deadline has been extended to 12 noon ET, August 12, 2004.

For all the specifics, see the formal CFP on the STC
site at http://www.stc.org/52ndConf/Proposal

Speakers receive a discount on an otherwise value-priced conference. Speakers from all levels are welcome, as the
conference attracts those who are new to the field as well as those who have been in the field for decades. And Seattle is a *wonderful* conference city, with the conference located in the heart of downtown.
A discount? That's it? At conferences where I've spoken, I've not had to pay the conference registration at all. And I sometimes get a speaker stipend to boot.

Funny that upon scanning the STC dite, the only conference links I could find were related to submitting proposals; the conference icon noted the date, but nowhere could I find the place.

I also noticed an interesting quirk: the STC "reqires" that, if you contribute a paper to the conference for the proceedings, you must transfer copyright to the STC. The site goes on to say that if you want to re-use the article, the STC will grant a non-exclusive, royalty-free license or will reassign the copyright back to the author and retain tha same non-exclusive, royalty-free license.

This seems pretty greedy. I don't see why the STC can't simply use one-time publications rights, then ask for or negotiate for more if they want/need it. I love the reason they give: "This procedure helps STC distribute information to the technical communication community in the most efficient manner." In reality, this policy is not author friendly.

Yeah, I know some might say "well, what's the big deal?" Well, if you're an author who has any significant portion of income relying on freelance work, then you sure don't want to be giving away your work so easily. And I'll bet this policy keeps many popular and well-known industry writers from presenting at the STC conference.
