Holy smokes. My understanding was that our monthly fee for food and room was covered by meeting members. STC Ops seems kind of high to me, but then so does my daughters school. They don't even break even... yow. Maybe I should be a financial planner...

That may be, but many chapters also produce a periodical newsletter, which, if it's not distributed solely online, incurs printing and mailing costs. Chapters also sometimes give out local awards. And probably other expenses. I knew the STC returned a portion of dues to the local chapter, and that I have no issue with.

I can tell you I dropped my STC membership b/c they never helped me achieve anything. Ever. But then I'm in Minnesota. The Lutheran Police State. Perhaps it's simply my chapter.

I've learned quite a bit from articles I've read in the journal and in Intercom. Sometimes the information has even helped me in my work. I rarely go to local chapter meetings (I have the option of three different chapters around here) unless (a) I'm looking for work and need networking opportunities (a pretty fruitless foray the past couple of years), (b) I happen to hear they are having a speaker that I'm particularly excited about hearing (such as recent appearences here in Silicon Valley by Andrea Ames and Mike Hamilton), or (c) there happens to be a topic that I hear about that strikes my fancy and potentially fills a useful knowledge gap.
