I'm a FTE, not a contractor. Regardless of whether deadlines are
slipped by the project lead/manager or not, you still gotta hit them.
Your example is a classic example of a poorly run project, and yes,
it's common. But because it's common doesn't mean it's right or good.
;-)

As I stated, you gotta hit your deadline. If you obviously can't, then
the deadline either moves or something drops off the "to do" list. But
rolling pushbacks? That's a sure sign of poor project management.
