This reminds me of a Houston-based company that took three months to approve
my hiring. I was currently employed at another company. After the Houston
company approved my hiring, they notified me I would have to pass a drug
test. They expected me to give notice at my current company first and then
pass the drug test before I started work with them two weeks later. Knowing
that drug tests can produce false positives, I was not willing to give
notice in one place and then find myself out of both jobs if there were a
false positive. So I told them I couldn't leave that quickly, and I put off
giving notice until after the drug test results came in. But I never had the
nerve to tell them why, because they would have thought I was some kind of
druggie.

This same company had insisted that I fill in my current salary on the
application form, BEFORE they allowed me upstairs to interview for the job.
I did it, but I would never do it again. As it turned out, both of these
experiences were good predictors of the company's attitude towards its
employees. I left after six months for a better job that I am still happy in
four years later.
