We use "and then" when writing procedures. It's a Microsoft standard
(not one that I agree with).

Same paragraph. The 2nd sentence is not a disjunctive thought, it's a
natural follow-on. The paragraph break would simply slow the user down.

By the way, I don't understand the reasoning for using "and then"
together.
I see it every so often, but I don't understand it. I always say:

"Highlight the item you want to work with, then press F4." Seems to me
that's the way people talk most often.

And re: the side thread, the screen appears, not magically, but because
that is what the program causes to happen as a result of the action.
