I'm 57 and have been doing technical writing since I was in high school, 
even if I didn't have a job with that title until 11 years ago.

In general, age and experience have counted in my favor, at least in 
terms of getting a decent salary. In my most recent position, though, 
each round of layoffs managed to knock off the oldest person remaining. 
Those laid off skewed a few years older, on average, than those 
remaining, but never so blatantly as to expose the company to a lawsuit 
over it; and the company could easily argue that their financial 
situation prompted them to cut the highest-paid workers (south of the 
executive suite, of course).

This is the only instance in which age ever worked against me that I'm 
aware of.
