I didn't actually read where the reviewing of HOW people used the tools was more important than the skills, writing ability, and more. Nor did I read that the ability to use tools was the ONLY criteria by which candidates were considered.

I, for one, definitely come down on the side of "I need you to be able to write because I can always get you the needed training to learn a new tool." Frankly, if *I* can learn to use a table saw without removing any body parts, then others can learn FrameMaker/Word/HTML....

That being said, if I have two equally qualified candidates who claim they are power users of ABC Tool, I am going to check to see HOW they used it. That's not dismissing the requisite writing skills or other pertinent experiences. Rather, it is performing due diligence on their professional claims.

I just don't get the "either/or" arguments that I see here (never have, either, in the 5+ years I've read this list).

In the end, all else being equal, I'll perform due diligence on a candidate's claim. If that means reviewing their HTML code, then fine. If they don't want that, then tell me that they're just learning to do HTML and used Word.

Just my 2¢
