Thanks to Eilene Heckman, Carla Martinek, Bruce Evans, John Clark, Lee Hunter, & Dana Worley (hope I haven't overlooked anyone?) for all the feedback on Palm devices. Sounds like Palm IIIxe is reliable enough, and that porting its data over to a later Palm generation is painless.

I bought my daughter a refurbished IIIxe for $49.95 and am submitting paperwork for a $20 rebate, bringing down my net cost (with tax) to under $31.95 plus a stamp. Not bad for a device that apparently sold for about $200 when it came out.

If, like her old man, discovers that she cannot live without it, *she* can shell out her own bux for a new Tungsten E (or better) and move up to the world of more-detailed, color displays and faster processors (and learn a whole new version of Grafitti, unless she adopts one of the other writing-recognition packages).
