As others have mentioned, it is probably based on preference. However, I
can think of one reason why hyphenation may be inappropriate for
technical writing - ragged right paragraphs.
Hyphenation is generally used to allow a justified or solid block form
of paragraph. Lack of hyphenation pretty much guarantees a ragged right
edge to the paragraph. *Studies* have shown that ragged right is much
easier to read and scan than justified and solid block paragraph
formation.
*Studies* in this case is my memory of various official manuals of style
and my psychology of technical communication course work. Believe at
