I use quotes in one particular instance--to refer to RFID "smart" labels in some of my documentation. The labels themselves aren't smart, of course, but they're perceived to be because they have computer chips in them.

For example:
The printer encodes information on RFID transponders
that are embedded in âsmartâ labels.

I leave out the word "smart" whenever I can, but when I want/need to acknowledge the word in a sentence like that, making it bold, italic, or a different color would make it stand out way more than I want it to.

Happy Friday!
