Hi Kevin,

>From Word 2000 Help: "By default, Word embeds pictures in a document. You
can reduce the size of a file by linking a picture. In the Insert Picture
dialog box (Insert menu, From File submenu), click the picture, click the
arrow to the right of the Insert button, and then click Link to File. While
you can't edit the picture, you can see it in your document and print it
when you print the document."

The link is relative, i.e. you *will* lose the picture if you move/transmit
the Word file without the graphic file.

This is a standard method for reducing file size. To embed (unlink) a linked
graphic, select it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9. When you embed the graphic, the
file size grows, but then you can move/transmit the Word file without
worrying about losing the graphic. Some writers work with linked graphics
while a document is being developed, and then embed the graphics when the
Word file is transmitted outside the organization. Other writers never have
to embed the graphics, since their documents are converted to PDF or some
other format before delivery.
