I confess I still like "subsidy publishing" better, because it lacks the
connotation.
BTW, I just thought of a potentially amusing postscript to this thread.
Does anybody remember that I LOVE LUCY episode in which Lucy wrote the
awful novel, REAL GONE WITH THE WIND? It was exactly the sort of book
that supports that connotation of "vanity publishing." The plot
involved her sending it to a publisher named Dorrence -- which is, in
real life, a vanity/subsidy publisher.

Well, that's exactly what I was talking about. Apparently "subsidy
publishing" a neologism to take the imagined sting out of "vanity
publishing"? Maybe it was coined by some marketing weenie in the vanity
publishing business? But you've got to explain it, whereas if you use
the standard, traditional, well understood term, you wouldn't have to
explain it <g>
