I'm not sure where you would get this impression. Quite the opposite, some of the leaders in the movement to encourage the use of CS and standards are nto Nazis at all. For example, Jeffrey Zeldman says in one of his books to use CSS, but don't feel constrained by it. He recognizes the need for web developers to actually produce work on time and within budget, and advocates that often hybrid systems are the way to go.

That said, there are many examples of very liquid design. alistapart.com and sitepoint.com are but two excellent resources. there's also the very interesting csszengarden.com.
