As a manager, I think it is inappropriate for an employee to give
me a gift individually. If you're the sort who likes to buy little
chocolate santas or bake cookies and leave something on
everybody's desk in the office it's ok to include me along with
everyone else, but no more than that. IMO, the only time it is
appropriate to get your manager any more of a gift than that is
if there's some sort of life event involved (wedding, birth, etc.),
and then it would be best if it came from the entire team as a
group rather than from individuals.
