This topic was recently discussed on the WORD-PC list, where Rob Little of
Microsoft offered the following explanation:

"Word 2003 added some checks to detect subtle corruptions in the file. These
corruptions could lead to crashes or hangs during editing the file, so we
now put up a corrupt document alert. To open these [subtly corrupt Word
2000] files, use the "Open and Repair" option in the Open dialog. (The Open
button has a dropdown arrow next to it, click on that arrow and you'll see a
list of Open options, one of them should be Open and Repair)."

In other words, Word 2003 catches subtle corruptions that are tolerated
(i.e. unnoticed) by Word 2000. The documents in question might open
flawlessly in Word 2000 without ever crashing. In any case, Rob's fix worked
for me when I had a similar problem.
