diotima,
I can certainly relate. My 'writing speed' tends to vary, but is usually extremely slow to begin with.

I have found that:
- writing about unfamiliar things is slow until things 'click' into place.
- at the beginning of a project, there is often insufficient information available which impedes the writing process. By this I mean although the product/application you may be writing about has been developed, related policies (i.e. marketing, support and similar) may not be fully formed and these may affect your approach to the writing.

After the initial stage, the writing process tends to progress more smoothly (often after you have 'trained' the SMEs to provide the information you require).

Whenever I am concerned about the speed at which my work progresses, I recall the words of a former manager, who said:
"The work will get done. Some days you will work fast, some days slow, but the work will get done. "
The result may not be perfect, but given the applications I write about (and hence their documents) are constantly evolving, the result is generally 'good enough for right now'.

Hope this helps,
Robyn
