But, on the bigger question of whether it is right -- in cases other
than lists -- to use a comma before and, most grammar books cover
this.

Am curious why "Comma" has the initial cap? Wasn't there a thread on
this recently? I was one of those who is continuously annoyed by the
lack of caps, especially in sentence case, but I am beginning to see
the other side of that discussion now.
