After talking with a co-worker, I have another dimension to add to this
discussion--project complexity.
Take the contstruction industry as an example, and compare the demands of
working for Company A vs. Company B. Company A produces trowels, which
have variations like point shapes and types of wood used for handles, and
which require a single page of instructions each. Company B produces
cranes, which require multiple pages for each system, from the engine to the hoist to the wheels or tracks, and everything in between. A writer could handle writing/maintaining documentation about many more trowel projects than crane projects simultaneously!
Of couse, an investigation of good content management systems would likely
be beneficial in either case. :)
