Here's a quick fix:
1. Save the Word doc as HTML. Word will save the images as a nice set
of JPGs or PNGs (I believe there is an option somewhere to determine
which format to use).
2. Then, re-insert the new JPGs/PNGs into the Word doc. But first, take
a look at the file sizes - maybe you need to resample the original
images or reshoot them at a lower/smaller quality.
Oh, and delete all the crufty Word-generated HTML.
