Almost forgot: If all else fails, you can always print a copy of the 
PDF and run it through OCR software. Worst-case scenario (if the print 
function is disabled): use SnagIt to create screenshots of every page 
of the manual, then run those files through OCR software.

Another option: try the PDFConverter from Scansoft 
(http://scansoft.com/pdfconverter/overview/). I have no personal 
experience with this software, but recall a PC Magazine review that 
said it worked well. Might not work on a password-protected document, 
but I believe they have a demo, so it won't cost you anything to try.
