ANNOUNCE: Contribute to the first textbook for
Chinese technical communicators!

Dr. Li Huilin of the Kunming University of Science and Technology is
planning to produce the first textbook on technical communication written
expressly to meet the needs of a Chinese audience. The current working
title for the project is as follows: "Communicating with English readers:
creating effective business documents and technical information"

To create this book, Dr. Li is seeking contributions from recognized
English-speaking experts in a wide range of subjects. He has received
strong interest in the project from a prestigious Chinese publisher
(Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press), and both are quite serious
about respecting international intellectual property laws and protecting
your rights as an author. Payment would be similar to that in Western
academic publishing, namely a share of the royalties from sales. Royalties
are likely to be only moderate (this is the case for most textbooks) but
might also become moderately high because of the huge potential
market--there is no way to tell at this point. In any event, participating
in this book will offer you the chance to participate in a historic
occasion.

I have strongly recommended that the publisher create a publishing
agreement that purchases only the Chinese rights to contributions, leaving
the authors free to market their contributions elsewhere in the world.
Rights to a subsequent Chinese-language translation may also be
negotiated. Details are still being discussed with the publisher.

If you're interested in learning more and possibly in contributing a
chapter, please contact me so I can send you the proposed table of
contents and discuss some additional details.

EVENT: Free Online Event - Reuse: A Substantial Factor in
Determining ROI for Content Management

March 1, 2005 - 1:30pm EST
Sponsored by Data Conversion Laboratories

When developing a business case for content management there are many
factors used to determine return on investment. One of the most important
factors, content reuse, can provide an excellent return on investment and
can be used to help sell the need for content management to your
organization. Reusing content (write once, reuse content many times)
results in substantially lower costs of creation, maintenance and delivery
of content. And, if you translate your content, reuse can have an even
greater impact on lowering costs.

Join content management maven Ann Rockley to learn how content reuse can
be used to determine return on investment for content management.

Attendees will learn:

- Where reuse has an impact on return on investment
- How to identify your percentage of reuse
- How to calculate return on investment using reuse

Register today: http://www.dclab.com/cmwebinar.asp (it's free!)

ANNOUNCE: Online Advisory Group - Call for Volunteers

I'm looking for industry personnel as occasional volunteers for our online
Advisory Group (for the Technical Communication Certificate Program -
online).

We are a mid-size University-College with the main campus located on
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Our new Technical
Communication Certificate program is going to Education Council's
Curriculum Committee for review and final approval within the next few
months.

Our Advisory Group will be meeting online on an ongoing basis to ensure
that the Technical Communication Program is on track for meeting student
and industry needs. An Advisory Group should consist of representation by
some of the following resources:

- employers
- students
- professional bodies (eg. STC)
- individuals working in the field of training
- relevant departmental representatives at Malaspina University-College
- course developers/service contractor

We have some of the above representatives, but need some more industry
representation. I'm hoping to get someone who has worked, or currently
works in an area where there is a lot of technical writing taking place,
so that they can give us input into current indsutry requirements for
technical writers.

Representatives are volunteers, with appointments in place for three years
(unless they need to opt out).

Time commitment is minimal, since the Advisory Group is meeting through
WebCT online dicussion. Representatives are expected to give input to
program, curriculum, industry and related information from time to time
and to check into the online forum at least twice per month for updates.
