Actually XML isn't a versioning system... classic versioning systems
as used by software engineers are things like RCS, SourceSafe,
Perforce, and others (and several variants of RCS). More
complex version management systems specifically for
docs are also available, AuthorIT for example (it has version or
revision management tools but also other tools for more general
"content management", i.e., to help with single-sourcing /
building multiple outputs -- all of which you can build yourself
on top of a revision control system).
XML is something you may or may not store in a versioning system,
just like like text, word docs, frame .fm files, pictures, etc. ...
I'm voting for the first option anyway (Perforce).
