Here's a cheat that has served me well:
1. Take a digital photo and insert the resulting JPEG into a new Visio
drawing.
2. Build an illustration *over* the photo, using straight lines, curves,
rectangles, ovals, etc. Add shading and fine grids as needed for the
details.
3. Delete the photo from the drawing. What's left is a clear schematic
without the clutter of a live photo. YMMV
