Now approach your mark and ask him or her to quickly, orally, give you
answers to the following arithmetic problems: What's 2 x 7? 8 + 6? 19 -
5? 9 + 5? 24 - 10?
After several of these, all with the correct answer of 14, say, "Okay.
Now name a vegetable." The vast majority of people who have not
encountered this before will say "carrot," at which point you unfold
your paper and show it to the person.
Just tried this with a bunch of people and no one said "carrot". ;-)
Probably works best with people who grew up in the US and have some sort of middle-class affinity for gold jewelry ;-)
