To take this a little further:
French uses this symbol - for those of you who know French but haven't
studied that much etymology and have always wondered why they use this
little symbol, it usually means a historical letter following the letter
with the caret is no longer there - as far as I've cared to notice it is
always an 's'. One example of a word that both French and English share is
'forest' but in French, it is spelled 'forêt'. The 's' was there when the
word made it across the channel but now it isn't on the mainland anymore.
