Subject:seek studies on readability of rewritten text From:Jeff Allen <jeffrey -dot- allen -at- mycom-int -dot- fr> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Fri, 4 Mar 2005 10:49:39 +0100
Hello techwriters,
I am getting ready to conduct an evaluation study on the quality of automatic
translation text output.
There are several translation quality assessment methods which already exist and
which I plan to consider.
However, I am also interested in considering readability/comprehensibi
ity/understandability studies that have been conducted on texts that have been
rewritten according to contolled language or other types of style writing
guidelines.
Along these lines, I am aware of the following studies:
Chervak, Steve, Colin Drury, and James Ouellette (1996) ?Field Evaluation of
Simplified English for Aircraft Workcards,? Proceedings of the 10th FAA/AAM
Meeting on Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance and Inspection, Alexandria,
Virginia.
Shubert, Serene, Jan Spyridakis, Heather Holmback, and M.B. Coney (1995) ?The
Comprehensibility of Simplified English in Procedures?, Journal of Technical
Writing and Communication 25, pages 347?336.
Holmback, Heather, Serena Shubert, and Jan Spyridakis. 1996. "Issues in
conducting empirical evaluations of controlled languages." Proceedings of the
first international workshop on Controlled Language applications (CLAW-96).
Leuven, Belgium: pp. 166?177.
Spyridakis, Jan, H. Heather Holmback, and Serena K. Shubert. 1997. "Measuring
the translatability of Simplified English in procedural documents." IEEE
transactions on professional communication 40:4-12.
Does anyone know of other such studies on this topic that are available?
Jeff
