Patrick,

I use Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional to convert large documents in
Word all the time, and it does everything that you say you need,
flawlessly. (I haven't yet upgraded to Acrobat 7, which is the newly
released/current version.)

I have found, however, that you need to have plenty of memory
"headroom" when converting large documents; you will want to do the
PDF conversion on a PC that has as much RAM installed as possible. I
would say 512 MB of RAM is a minimum for a large document with a lot
of graphics; more is better.

The fact that you are getting "insufficient memory" errors, and that
the process is very slow (possibly indicating a lot of paging back and
forth in virtual memory) would suggest to me that you're on a PC
without enough memory for the task at hand.

Adobe offers a 30-day try-before-you-buy program for Acrobat 7 Professional:

Download and install the latest version on a reasonably fast PC with a
lot of memory, and try creating your PDFs again.

Best regards,

Barry
