I've actually been noticing it for the past year (it started, not
surprisingly,
almost as soon as I began my new direct-hire manager position and
stopped pursuing contract work). There haven't been any of the "generic
tech writer" kind of calls I used to get during the dot-com years, they're
all looking for people with experience in the specific technical areas I
have experience in. Since I don't have the spare time to do much of
anything on the side, I've been passing the contacts on to various local
folks I know who might be qualified/interested in them, and since
everyone I know well enough to recommend for a job is currently
working, just recently I revised my online profiles to delete interest in
individual contributor writer assignments and only show interest in
possible manager positions in certain specific areas I might consider
moving to...just in case.
