Tests are a good idea. Surprises are not.
If a company were to spring a surprise test on me, I'd wonder how many other
surprises I should expect from them: surprise projects, surprise deadlines,
etc.
Be up front with the people you're interviewing. You lose nothing except
possible ill-will.
