Re: Giving a surprise test to interviewees?
I'm curious, though, why you think it's important to make this a
surprise. Why not just tell people they're coming in for an interview
and a brief writing test? Deliberately hiding stuff sounds like a bad
way to start off a relationship with anyone.
I have enough short "tests" on technical writer job interviews to expect them as a matter of course--even if they don't tell me about them when I book the interview.
OK, most of them are of the form, "Here is an activity. Write a short procedure describing how to do the activity."
Still, in doing this, I provide the employer/client with a sample of my work that allows them to assess my ability to do the work they need me to do to their level of satisfaction.
The time I will start to worry is the day they give me a test with questions like, "Read the above paragraph. What was the author thinking when he wrote those words?" I used to get those in high school English tests, and it's always tempting to answer it with, "Lunch".
