I guess the big question is whether or not you're able to include travel expenses. If you are, there are lots of great conferences all over the US of A. However, assuming that travel is not part of the offer, there is a conference called "DocTrain" that takes place in northern Mass. (Dracut or Chelmsford or something like that) every year in October-ish.

I attended 2 years ago, and I'd like to attend again if I can. There were definitely some good sessions and, of course, some less-good sessions, too. Considering it's so close to home, I would say you really can't go wrong with it.

If I had to put my finger on a specific criticism when I say "less-good" sessions, it would be that a few sessions made me feel like I was being "missionized" to some new religion of single-sourcing or this program vs. that. To balance off the criticism with a compliment, I can say that there were also a number of more productive and useful sessions that provided more of a conceptual, problem-solving approach while simply presenting various options to achieve the goal without overly pushing any particular option.

Their web site is www.doctrain.com. Although their site still contains the information from the '04 conference, you can at least take a peek and see what types of things they offer and whether it fits your needs.

Good luck... Who knows, maybe I'll see you there next year! : )

My boss has offered to pay for me to go to a conference or a training
course to advance my skills as a technical writer. Does anyone have a
suggestion for the best course or conference? We are currently using
RoboHelp 5X for our writing projects. I'm located in New Hampshire if
that helps narrow down the choices.
