But I think that a good tech writer has the ability to edit along with the
ability to write. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive qualities
by any means. In fact, I'd say one supports the other.

I call my five-sentence test a "writing and editing exercise" because not
only do I want the taker to find mistakes, I also want the person to
rewrite the sentences into a grammatically correct and more cogent form.
For example, one of my "test" sentences is grammatically perfect, but it
is completely in passive voice. I'm hoping the job candidate will rewrite
it into active voice. So far, every test-taker has gotten this one, at
least.
