I've been reading with interest all the debate
regarding the surprise test for interviewees :)
Everyone has brought up some very thought provoking
issues on both sides of the debate. However, I find
it interesting that no one has brought up the issue of
legality... I would strongly suggest that the
interviewer work with someone in HR to refine and
validate any test given to interviewees. Otherwise,
you are just asking for a lawsuit. While I'm not an
HR specialist, I have seen instances where a "test"
was given to interviewees that was not truly
indicative of a candidate's performance on the job or
was related to a skill not clearly identified in the
job description and wound up being the grounds for a
lawsuit. The interviewer had not received clearance
from HR for administering the test and wound up being
fired as a result of the lawsuit. The company settled
out of court with the interviewee. So.... just a word
of caution -- it may be fine to "surprise" the
interviewee, but don't "surprise" your own company by
administering any test.

Cheers!
