That, or something about the way tech writers are trained and present themselves.

I've worked with a number of tech writers, and the best one was someone with no experience in the field, but some general professional writing credits. That could be coincidence, of course. Still, I've always suspected that the reason was that the newcomer had no bad habits to unlearn, and simply approached the work in a practical, let's-get-things done manner.
