I have read some of the responses to this email and would like to add my (two
cents) of (wisdom?)
1) Are we tech writers, or typesetters?
2) How 'shareable' is the output from LaTeX, or any other 'typesetter'
application?
Between users in the same company, or diverse external activities.
3) Can the output be used on the Web for 'business partners'?
4) Is LaTeX 'printer-independent'?
5) Is it supported by the 'run-of-the-mill' commercial printer?
6) What is the 'cost of ownership'?
7) Is it a tool that is easily taught?
8) What makes it 'better' for the small company to invest time and money in?
9) Why Is it important to know what the 'finished' product will look like,
when you start
out making the initial outline"?
10) How do you calculate 'return on investment', when it is possible that
you will have to
'reengineer' the data many times over the years?
11) What is the 'target' market defined by the manufacturer of LaTeX?
12) What makes it better than 'nroff/troff'?
13) What platform/operating systems is it 'native' to?
14) How much of an investment does a company have to make to get the
application,
and keep it for 5 years?
You could consider the 'engineering drawing' packages that are available.
All these do an 'adequate job, depending on the need. Examples I can
immediately think of that can create 'simple' drawings, but have varying prices, and
scales of capability.

3) SmartDraw
Which would your company choose for its 'standard'?
I know that I have addressed a lot of issues, but they are all important.
Some more than others to the diverse members of this list.
