4) Is LaTeX 'printer-independent'?

Yes, as DVI or PDF.

5) Is it supported by the 'run-of-the-mill' commercial printer?

Yes, since it outputs PDF.

6) What is the 'cost of ownership'?

USD 0

7) Is it a tool that is easily taught?

No...

12) What makes it better than 'nroff/troff'?

E,g. because nroff/troff/groff does not use a paragraph-based H&J algorithm

13) What platform/operating systems is it 'native' to?

Available for all platforms.

14) How much of an investment does a company have to make to get the
application, and keep it for 5 years?

USD 0

Best regards,
Mats Broberg
