Arrghhh! Why always the templates and the style guides and the content
management?
Do you have a file server on the LAN? Good, there's your central system
to get started with. Just make a sensible directory structure and put
your documents there. Once you outgrow that, then you can shop for
another system. You'll know your requirements better.
Just start writing and delivering the documents your company needs.
That will be enough of a challenge, and will buy you a lot more instant
credibility than templates and style guides.
Follow your good sense for style and formatting. It'll be consistent
for now, since you are the only tech writer. After a while, you can
identify your nicest documents and use them to derive a template.
A style guide is something to work on in between critical deliverables
- it's not your first deliverable.
Once you have a reputation for delivering the right docs at the right
time, it'll be a lot easier to introduce and enforce templates and
style guides later.
