All together now,

Let's learn 'kerning', 'leading', and Knuth's answer to hyphenation.

Typography and typesetting are getting into the weeds.

Left-justified, right-justified, centered, ragged-right,

Now we have to get into styles, and setup 'paragraph styles', lead-in
headers, justification of outlining numbering.

Having never worked with the 'advanced' word processors - such as
FrameMaker, PageMaker, and other 'systems' (vs 'application'), I cannot take sides.

However, Word does what I want, when I want it.

I imagine it is the same for others that do not have the 'luxury' of the
'advanced products'.

I have worked with typesetters, used Word, WordPerfect, AmiPro. They all
seemed to have the same 'challenges'' when trying to meet the
'idiosyncrasies'/'needs' of the reader.

I remember using nroff, troff, wordstar, and a mainframe computer to
generate my documents.

It is the case - "when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything is a
nail." You make do with what you got.

A different slant on the 'formatting'/'justification' of text. Will the
document you write be readily 'transportable' to another platform - example Word
2003 on PC to Word 2000 on a Mac?

What about putting your text into PowerPoint, MS Project, or Visio?

I have needed to do that.

I could go on and on about the challenges that I have come up against in
moving documents from one 'document-generator' to another.

As an independent contractor, I take what I get and do my best to
'conform'/'comply' with my client.

Some food for thought, and some good discussion.
