I suspect that PDFTK simply scripts GSview, which can do all the merging and bursting stuff plus lots more. Further, I think that's what most of the commercial solutions are doing as well. You're mostly buying a GUI, saving you the horror of

c:\pdftk 1.pdf 2.pdf 3.pdf cat output 123.pdf

When AdobeMedia moves the <cough> open-standard </cough> PDF goalposts again, the commercial providers will be happy to harvest some more dollars from you. The PDFTK boys will probably have a free update the next day.

I know, I know. It's un-American not to pay.

Then again, if the commercial tools are based on GNU-licensed libraries (as I suspect), isn't it a little galling to be charged good money for ... packaging?

I know, I know. Paying for packaging is as American as it gets.
