if I'm hiring a technical writer, I don't want basic. I want "take a
function by the horns and document the crap out of it" type of
writer.
You're right, of course. And what you said is what I meant,
though my use of the word "basic" didn't convey the kinds
of questions I ask when I interview tech writers.
I ask detailed questions about the candidate's preferred
way of working; how they approach writing a brand new
document about a product or feature that doesn't completely
exist yet; specifics about their experience with the technology
my company works with; and a bunch more.
At one job, I had the reputation of being a tough interviewer.
That's a reputation I like.
