John Posada <jposada01 -at- yahoo -dot- com> brought up certification as a way to demonstrate credentials of technical writers.

There have been lots of arguments both for and against this idea in the past. You might want to take a look at what the Editors' Association of Canada is doing with regards to certification for editors (http://www.editors.ca/certification/index.htm).

Although editing is a different skill from writing, I think that some of the issues are the same.
