I would definitely keep them in. It gives each step
closure and completes the segment. Also, different aps
close or save in different ways. Some data entry forms
won't save until the user tabs through each field. Others
allow you to hit 'enter' to save and continue.

Clearly defining which action(s) save and advance the
process are a big plus.
