To All,

This 'problem', or rather 'challenge' is an excellent reason to impose
configuration management, and change control, on the 'graphics'.

It might take some getting used to but it is well worth the effort.

One of 'our problems' is assigning 'meaningful' names to a file, and then
find that we have to make a change (that is, make a new version). And have to
create a new name, or add Version information.

If you are going to use a spreadsheet, database, or similar tool to track
your 'files', you should have agreement with all concerned on how to represent
the 'files'.

I am using 'files' as a generic term to refer to ANY
graphic,computer-generated information. This includes the PowerPoint, Visio, PaintBrush, and other
tools we use to create 'pictures'.

May I suggest that if you are in a hardware environment you talk to them
about version control. They have actual dollars that depend on the correct
version of things. I have seen thousands of dollars in scrap metal because
someone did not use the correct version. That is why they control their
blueprints, and each one of them is cataloged.

Remember - it was mentioned that someone would come after you and how hard
do you want it to be for them if you have no 'agreed upon system' that they
can use. Also, what about if you go into an organization with no 'standard'
way of doing things.

More food for thought.

And YES, I have worked in these environments (Hardware, Software,
Documentation), and had to lead an effort to 'totally' change all catalog numbers,
drawing numbers, etc., to the numbering system of a company that acquired us.
What a bummer!!! But a valuable lesson.

Harry
