I don't have my XP machine handy, but with the dialog box missing:

1. right click in the empty grey area of the task bar.
2. Select "Cascade Windows" (the option may be different in XP).

This usually happens when Windows maps a window (in this case dialog
box) in an extended area of the screen. This should force the dialog
box back in the viewable screen.

If I try to do anything else, the laptop beeps at me, as if the dialog box is open somewhere, but invisible to me. I can press Enter to "make the dialog box go away" so that I can close the application properly, but that doesn't explain why the dialog box is invisible. I can see every other dialog box in the application.
