I don't have my XP machine handy, but with the dialog box missing:
1. right click in the empty grey area of the task bar.
2. Select "Cascade Windows" (the option may be different in XP).
This usually happens when Windows maps a window (in this case dialog
box) in an extended area of the screen. This should force the dialog
box back in the viewable screen.
