I don't like the way Microsoft's spellchecker
handles double consonants before suffixes. It
permits "cancelled" but it insists on "traveled."
I assume that Microsoft is in a position to
dictate spellings to the English-speaking world,
so often I go along with Microsoft anyway. At
least it fixed the notorious Cupertino Effect,
which was responsible for many inadvertent
appearances of the word "Cupertino" where
"cooperation" was intended.
(Check the Google hits for "international cupertino.")
